My first year of teaching math and science has taught me many things. The most important thing I have learned while being in the classroom is that students need to have a sense of ownership and purpose of what they are learning. One of the issues that I recognized is the that the students were missing the hands-on part of the curriculum and were always wondering at what point in their life would they need multiplication skills or why should they know the phases of the moon. The need for students to make real-world connections has plays a huge role in student development and classroom learning.
The purpose of STEM-based learning is to provide students with an education that focuses on the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education aims to cultivate students' skills and knowledge in these areas and prepare them for careers in the rapidly evolving fields of science and technology.
The key points for implementing STEM into the classroom is to number one encourage students to think critically and obtain problem-solving skills. If you have ever had a student, ask the question of "why?" STEM learning is a great way to encourage students to apply scientific principles math concepts to solve real-world problems. We want to foster creativity and innovation and by implementing STEM-based learning, we can encourage student to think creatively when coming up with solutions.
