A Call To Action

The Why

In the heart of our educational journey lies the realization that STEM learning is not just a checkbox on a curriculum list but a catalyst for shaping the future. The motivation behind this alternative professional learning approach is deeply rooted in the understanding that traditional methods no longer suffice. As a society hurtles into an era dominated by technology and innovation, our classrooms must evolve in tandem. The backstory to this idea lies in the recognition of a glaring gap between the theoretical and practical aspects of STEM education. Motivated by a passion for nurturing inquisitive minds and inspired by the precedent set by progressive educators worldwide, I embarked on a journey to transform STEM learning in our classrooms. Research has unequivocally demonstrated the power of hands-on, project-based learning in STEM subjects. It's a shift from rote memorization to active engagement, from passive recipients of information to creators of knowledge. This idea arrived not as a lightning bolt but as a gradual revelation fueled by conversations with educators, insights from research literature, and the collective call for change in the educational landscape.

The What

The professional learning (PL) content I envision is a dynamic and immersive experience designed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to implement project-based learning (PBL) effectively in STEM classrooms. It is a departure from the traditional one-time workshops and instead unfolds as an ongoing journey, fostering a community of practice among educators.

The How

To bring this idea to fruition, I immersed myself in the world of project-based learning methodologies, drawing inspiration from pioneers in the field such as my mentor and teaching partner Richard Rafuse. The content of this professional learning is designed to be a dynamic and ongoing exploration. It involves a shift from the one-and-done model to a continuous journey of discovery. It taps into the power of community and collaboration, recognizing that the best learning happens not in isolation but through shared experiences.

The PL "STEM Odyssey: A Hands-On Journey in Professional Development"

The professional learning I propose is a series of immersive experiences that go beyond the traditional sit-and-get model. It involves teachers actively engaging in STEM projects, experiencing firsthand the challenges and triumphs of project-based learning. The content spans a spectrum from understanding the philosophy behind project-based learning to practical tips for implementation in diverse classrooms. The objective is to impower educators with practical skills and strategies for implementing engaging STEM projects in their classrooms.
