As a 7th-grade science teacher implementing STEM-based projects into the classroom, I've found that the COVA approach and the significant learning environment created in the ADL program have greatly aided my learning process and teaching practices. I first realized the potential of choice, ownership, and voice through authentic assignments when I engaged in a project where I could select the topic, design the project, and present my findings in a format of my choice which began with my Innovation Plan for implementing STEM-based projects in the classroom. This experience empowered me to take control of my learning journey and amplified my motivation and engagement.

When we were initially presented with the freedom and responsibility to choose and take ownership of our learning through an authentic project, my reaction was a mix of emotions. The idea of having the independence to direct my learning according to my interests and goals was exciting, but it also came with a sense of responsibility and uncertainty about whether I would be able to navigate the process effectively. In order to prepare myself for this level of ownership, I had to engaged in self-reflection to identify my interests, strengths, and areas for growth. I set clear learning objectives and devised a plan to achieve them, breaking down the project into manageable tasks and milestones.

Additionally, I sought out resources and support networks to aid me in areas where I lacked expertise or experience. Knowing what I know now about the COVA approach, I'm still planning to create a significant change in my classroom by offering a range of topics, projects, and resources for learners to choose from based on their interests and learning styles and allowing them to select what they want to explore, they will feel more engaged and motivated to dive deeper into the subject matter. I have continued to implement ownership by encouraging my students to take ownership of their learning journey by involving them in setting goals, designing projects, and assessing their progress. I also provide opportunities for learners to express their thoughts, ideas, and perspectives throughout the learning process. This includes discussions, presentations, or multimedia projects where they can share their insights and reflections with their classmates. I have also been able to create assignments that have real-world relevance and application, allowing learners to see the direct impact of their learning. Whether it's solving a community problem, creating a product, or conducting research, authentic assignments provide meaningful context for learning. During this program I was able to adjust to this style of learning by seeking guidance from my mentors and peers, I had to actively seek out resources, and engage in self-reflection to continuously improve my approach. Looking back, I would prioritize setting clearer goals and timelines to better manage my learning process and time.

Taking Control of Voice: It was initially challenging to focus on my organization as the audience for my work, as I was accustomed to academic assignments with predefined audiences. However, through reflection and feedback, I learned to tailor my communication and presentations to effectively address the needs and interests of my organization.

Attitude Toward Leading Change: My attitude toward leading change has evolved throughout the program. Initially hesitant, I now recognize the importance of advocating for meaningful change in my organization and am more confident in my ability to lead and inspire others.

Authenticity of Innovation Plan: My innovation plan is authentic and not merely created to fulfill coursework requirements. I genuinely hope to implement change in my organization to improve student learning experiences and outcomes. My continued hope is to help students and colleagues have a genuine passion about learning that will last them a lifetime.

Alignment with Learning Philosophy: The COVA approach and CSLE align closely with my learning philosophy, which emphasizes student-centered, inquiry-based learning. These approaches prioritize student agency, engagement, and real-world relevance, which are central tenets of my teaching philosophy.

In implementing STEM projects in the classroom, I plan to continue to apply the COVA approach to foster significant learning environments that prioritize choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity. By leveraging the COVA framework, I aim to empower learners to take control of their learning journey and cultivate a deeper engagement with STEM concepts. Through authentic assignments, students will have the freedom to choose topics that align with their interests and learning preferences, allowing for personalized and meaningful learning experiences. To prepare both learners and colleagues for the COVA approach and CSLE, I will provide professional development opportunities, resources, and ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition to this student-centered approach. Despite potential challenges such as resistance to change and resource constraints, I remain committed to implementing the COVA approach as it offers the best path towards fostering a culture of inquiry, creativity, and innovation in the classroom. Overall, I am committed to creating learning environments that empower students to take ownership of their learning and cultivate a passion for discovery and innovation. The COVA approach and CSLE provide a framework for achieving these goals and promoting meaningful, authentic learning experiences for all learners.

In applying the COVA approach to create significant learning environments in my organization, I plan to:

  • Provide learners with choice by offering a variety of project topics and formats to cater to diverse interests and learning styles.

  • Foster ownership by involving students in setting learning goals, designing projects, and reflecting on their progress.

  • Amplify student voice by providing opportunities for self-expression, reflection, and peer collaboration throughout the learning process.

  • Prepare learners and colleagues for the COVA approach and CSLE through professional development sessions, resources, and ongoing support.

  • Anticipate challenges such as resistance to change, resource constraints, and the need for ongoing professional development, and proactively address them through strategic planning and collaboration.
